June 2023 favourites list

Welcome to this month's favourites list.

This month's photos are from my recent visit to Darjeeling Express, Asma Khan's acclaimed and boundary pushing restaurant. With its emphasis on home style Indian food cooked by a team of women who would not usually be working in the commercial catering sector, it is great to visit upon its return to Kingly Court in Soho, London.

Film

She Said

In the mould of investigative journalism films like Spotlight and All The President’s Men, I found this film documenting the investigation which exposed Harvey Weinstein and birthed the “Me Too” movement highly engaging. The performances are stand out. Good to see so many women in starring roles in a journalistic drama, although obviously the circumstances are horrible. [Available on streaming services].

TV/Music

Fanny: The Right To Rock

In the 70s, there was an all woman band who truly rocked. With members who were mixed race, and lesbian/bisexual, they were trailblazers in every way. David Bowie and Bonnie Raitt were fans. Geoff Emerick engineered their records. Todd Rundgren produced them. They were the first all woman band to be signed to a major record label. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

A Simple Plan

It has taken me years to get around to seeing this thriller which is set in rural Minnesota where despite the sense of space, the tone is decidedly claustrophobic.
